Programme profile
This is a hybrid programme, jointly offered by the Maastricht Theatre Academy, the Maastricht Academy of Music, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, all of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University. The programme is an exciting cross-over of artistic skills, academic reflection, entrepreneurship and scholarly research. These competencies are fruitfully connected in projects and seminars with a strong focus on today’s societal issues.
The iArts programme is built on three pillars: Art, Science and Entrepreneurship. These three pillars each form a constant factor through the year. These three pillars will be important elements in each project. The subject matter in these three lines will gradually become more and more complex as you develop yourself further as an iArtist.
In the programme, tomorrow’s artists will take on the roles of entrepreneurs, policy makers, executive producers and researchers. Students will reveal new areas and contexts where knowledge and art can be meaningful: in an airport, within a social network, under a microscope. This is the philosophy of iArts: that “art should ceaselessly explore where it can make a difference”
Zuyd claims that “the iArts program trains you to be an artist, researcher and entrepreneur. At best, you‟ll be able to combine the three. You’ll develop the professional perspective and know-how required to reach out and connect to other doers and thinkers. You’ll learn how to make your artistic work meaningful to scientists, businesses, and community organisations and you’ll become an artist-researcher who knows his trade but thinks outside the box”
Programme content
In the course of the programme, you’ll work on a series of projects. You’ll invent creative and original solutions for current social and cultural issues, in the form of artistic products or artful interventions. Think installations, films, performances, and games. Think meetings, publications, plans, and enterprises. Each and every intervention will be the result of interdisciplinary teamwork based on three fundamental pillars:
ART
In the ‘ART’ pillar, you will work on universal elements that are important for interdisciplinary arts. You will also work on specific artistic techniques needed for each project.
SCIENCE
In the ‘SCIENCE’ pillar you will rarely work with quantitative research. When we use the word science we use it in a broad sense: independent thinking, analysing your surroundings, and general academic skills such as critical reading, writing, presenting, interviewing and reflecting on yourself.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
In this pillar, you will work on entrepreneurial skills in the practical sense by organising at least one cultural event per project together with your classmates. You will also work on your entrepreneurial skills on a more theoretical level in the module ‘iMarket’.
Furthermore you will have several individual coaching sessions during the year with our trained counsellors
